Five Ways To Ruin Your Skin

Five Ways To Ruin Your Skin

Here are five common mistakes people make that affect their skin adversely:

1. Overexposure to the sun. Always use sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30 and protects you against both UVA and UVB. Don't forget to apply behind the ears and neck, especially for men.

2. Stressing yourself too much. Stress causes your skin to be more reactive, which leads to worse acne and psoriasis. Hormones like adrenaline constrict blood vessels and deprive the tissue of nutrients. Get into mindfulness meditation, hypnosis, biofeedback, exercise, yoga, or tai chi to manage stress and help improve your complexion.

3. Picking on acne. Stop squeezing pimples and picking blemishes. If your skin is inflamed, go to your dermatologist quickly. Steroid injections can solve the problem quickly without leaving marks.

4. Not sleeping adequately. Stress is lowest during sleep, while anti-inflammatory molecules are at their highest levels. The less you sleep, the worse your skin condition is. Get 8 hours of sleep if you can, but if you can't, try adding 30 minutes, and see the difference.

5. Drying your skin out. Things like alcohol, cold weather and washing diligently in hot water can all dehydrate the skin. Use moisturizers with ceramides.

Sun block time is here again

If you haven't started wearing sun block yet, make sure you are not spending any time out in the sun. Depending upon your skin type, even fifteen minutes of sun can be enough to damage your skin.

Keeping your skin healthy can be achieved without spending lots of money going to the spa. Of course, it's always nice spending time at the spa because it can be so relaxing, but basic skin care should be part of our everyday life, not a luxury.

Our skin is the biggest organ by which toxins leave our body. Drinking lots of water helps remove toxins from our body and also keeps our skin hydrated and supple. Always use a moisturizer and, if you are unsure which one to use, go to the skin products counter at your local large department store and get a free consultation from a skin technician.

It is very common for women to say they don't use moisturizer because they have oily skin. Oil and moisture are very different and even the oiliest skin needs moisture. The best types of moisturizer for your face are none perfumed. Perfumed moisturizers typically contain alcohol and alcohol is a drying agent.

Don't forget the rest of your body when it comes to using moisturizer. Legs especially need moisturizer when they are exposed to the sun. Following some simple guidelines can keep your skin looking fresh and supple.

Padma Lakshmi's Summer Beauty Regimen

Filed in archive Beauty , Skin Care on July 4, 2010

According to model, award-winning cookbook author and Emmy-nominated host of the Top Chef -- Padma Lakshmi:

"Summer is the best time to show off your skin! In preparation for my days in the sun, I go straight for nourishing essential oils.

I have a love affair with good-for-you ingredients, and one of my favorite go-to products this summer is Dial® NutriSkin with Fruit Oil® Body Wash. I like to think of it as nutrition for my skin."

For glowing skin this summer, Padma Lakshmi recommends the following (found via):

Weekly Tips:

1) A natural glow starts with a deep cleansing facial treatment. To get rid of blemishes, dissolve a few drops of pure tea tree oil into a bowl of boiling water and use this to steam your face.

2) After this deep cleansing treatment, skin needs to be revived and renewed. Pat clean skin dry and slather pure honey all over your face, avoiding the eye area. Tap your fingers on your face for 5-7 minutes, allowing the gooey honey to act like a suctioning vacuum, pulling impurities from your pores.

3) Once a week, I mix together jojoba oil and coarse sea salt for an at-home exfoliating body scrub treatment. Simply rub and massage this mixture vigorously into the skin just before you have your shower. It's moisturizing, exfoliating, and gives your skin a great glow.

Daily Tips:

1) For my daily cleansing and moisturizing, I look for a body wash that will provide the same nourishment from head to toe. My new find this summer is Dial® NutriSkin Body Washes, a new line of ultra-hydrating body washes packed with light and refreshing fruit oils. The grape seed oil and lemongrass is a great combo - especially since grapes are known to be high in antioxidants.

2) One of the final steps in my skin regimen is bronzer. Powder bronzer is a great way to get a healthy, sun-kissed glow. I like to use it on my eyelids, above my cheekbones, and on my shoulders and collarbone.

3) My final and most important beauty tip is to make sure you dedicate your life to what truly makes you happy because happiness shows, and it's what makes a woman truly beautiful.

Solutions For Your Summer Skin Problems

Solutions For Your Summer Skin Problems

You're ready for summer. You're looking forward to Italian ices, 8 p.m. sun sets and more outdoor time. And the sun feels good on your skin.

However, you're also worried about a host of skin problems that you often encounter during the hot-weather season. Well, here are our top five skin-related summer bummers and what we suggest you can do about them.

Oil Slick On Your Face

The humid weather increases oil production, giving you oilier skin on your face. Try swiping on a toner twice a day. Apply a clay mask once a week to draw out impurities. Just be careful that you avoid your skin from getting dry too.

Chicken Skin

Are you seeing small red bumps on your skin? That's probably due to keratosis pilaris - chicken skin that usually shows up on the backs of your upper arms. Use a lotion with alpha- or beta-hydroxy acids to dissolve the bumps. Do not try to scrub them off with a loofah, as this could worsen your condition.

Ingrown Hair

Treat dry skin with a shave cream that is rich in essential oils. Forget the blade altogether. Try using a shea-butter-infused depilating cream instead. There are new spray-on formulas that make the hands stay clean. Apply heavily and stand on a towel to keep bathroom tiles slip-free. If you're in a hurry, put a mini electric shaver in your beach bag and then lube up afterward.

Darker Skin in Your Armpits

Shaving causes friction, which results in inflammation and brown or grayish patches. Make the skin brighter with a lotion that has hydroquinone. And use a new razor every three shaves.

Your Skin Breaks Out

Use sunscreen that is oil-free or non-comedogenic to prevent acne usually caused by ordinary sunscreens.

A Natural, No Make-up Look. How To?

A Natural, No Make-up Look. How To?
© _Nezemnaya_
My boyfriend hates it when I put too much red lipstick. But I love red lipstick! He always insists that a natural, no make-up look is always the best look for any woman. I kept saying that's just not possible.

Until I found this: How to Do a Natural, No Makeup Look. Read on...

Step 1. Clean Your Face

Start by cleaning your face with a facial cleanser and gently drying with cloth to exfoliate your skin.

Step 2. Moisturize and Even Out Skin Tone

You can use a tinted lotion, like La Mer The SPF 18 Fluid Tint, which also contains sun protection ($65 at saks.com). Apply it like moisturizer giving you a sheer look.

Step 3. Conceal Any Flaws

You can use a pigment-rich concealer like Chanel Long Lasting Corrective Concealer ($40 at chanel.com) for visible breakouts or deep undereye circles.

Step 4. Use Powder If Needed

If like me you have a skin that gets shiny, follow with an oil-absorbing powder. Then if your skin is very oily, skip the tinted moisturizer and use only concealer and powder. You may use Bare Escentuals Bare-Minerals Matte SPF 15 Foundation ($28 at sephora.com) for this purpose.

Step 5. Pick a Warm Cheek Color

Cream blushes in warm peaches or pinks give skin a natural, subtle flush. Try Smashbox High Lights/Creamy Cheek Color in Naked Beauty ($26 at smashbox.com).

Step 6. Shade Your Eyelids

Choose an eyelid shadow shade that is slightly darker than your skin. For that extra eye brightening, try applying CoverGirl Eye Enhancers in Champagne ($4 at drugstores) to the centers of the lids, the brow bones, and the inner corners of the eyes.

Step 7. Dot on Eye Pencil (Optional)

Lightly dot a soft gray or brown pencil between your top lashes (if your eyes need extra definition) with Shiseido Makeup Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil in Brown ($20 at nordstrom.com).

Step 8. Subtly Amp Up Lips

Pick a shade that matches your lips exactly and press the color into your lips with your fingertip instead of applying it directly from the tube. You may try Aveda Lip Tint SPF 15 in Verbena ($14 at aveda.com).

Step 9. Enhance Lashes

Even for a non-make up look, defined lashes are essential. Try Clinique Naturally Glossy Mascara ($14 at clinique.com).
